課程概述

This seminar examines the contexts within which a couple of philosophers and linguists have defined the idea of game as a master trope in their inquiries. It also looks into the strategies of communication and interpretation proposed by philosophers, linguists, and art historians. The disciplines involved in our process of inquiry are three-fold: linguistics, aesthetics, and the emerging new approach of evolutionary epistemology. The problematics prescribed for the seminar center around (1) how philosophers and historians have appropriated evolution theory in the humanities; (2) how the idea of game playing serves to revise certain reductions about the arts; (3) how the mixture of semiotics and (literary) hermeneutics (a) sheds light on dissolving the conflicts of interpretation and (b) addresses in a fruitful way the tension between our perceptions and our targeted artworks.

課程目標
Both the instructor and students will learn how they can relate critical theories to biological and aesthetic issues at a profound level.

課程要求
Students are required to (1) preview contents for each week; (2) participate in class discussions; (3) submit critiques which include their reflections on assigned topics; (4) present proposals of their final projects; (5) submit final papers which reveal their understandings of both methodological and textual issues.
